Head of Unit “Innovation Policy and Investment for Growth”
Mark Nicklas is the Head of Unit “Innovation Policy and Investment for Growth” in the European Commission’s DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW). His unit is leading the European Commission’s work on the renewed EU industrial policy strategy. The objective is to foster investment in a smart, innovative and sustainable EU industry, revitalising EU regions, helping industry and citizens to adapt to the changing global environment, with technology leading the way. In particular, his unit is managing the EU Industry Days, the Industry 2030 high-level industrial roundtable and the Strategic Forum on Important Projects of Common European Interest. From 2012 to 2016, he was Deputy Head of Unit Innovation Policy for Growth. Before that, he was closely involved in the European enterprise and industry policy as the Assistant to the European SME Envoy and Director-General for Enterprise and Industry. Previously, he spent several years in the European Commission’s transport policy department. Prior to joining the European Commission in 2003, he held various posts in the telecommunications industry in Germany. Mark holds a Ph.D. in economics.
